people saying “learn your fandom history” is so fucking funny like … man literally i dont care
“learn fandom history” doesn’t mean like catch up on the ship wars and drama
It means be aware that historically, authors like Anne Rice will sue you, organise their fans to attack you, and dox you over writing fanfic. They don’t care that you’re a small nobody from one corner of the internet, they will pursue legal action. This is why places like ao3 say you can’t advertise Kofi or patreon, because as long as fandom stuff is done for free, they can’t do anything more than send scary sounding letters to you, but if you make money off fanfic, they have the basis for a real legal case
It also means remember the various fandom purges, there have been dozens but the most well known is probably strikethrough from back on livejournal. Overnight, thousands of fanworks and fan accounts were terminated, because places like livejournal are more interested in pleasing their ad partners than looking after their users. They flag and delete based on a few key words. The Tumblr ban on NSFW is a more recent example, everyone remembers how efficient the bots were at filtering actual NSFW from random pictures of sand dunes and kittens.
“learn fandom history” means realise that all this will happen again. If the community you have in fandom is important to you, learn this shit
